The standard LIDESC symbols and their meanings


The license description files used by LIDESC describe the characteristics of licenses using symbolic terms. LIDESC does not parse the license text for meaning, instead a human reads the license text and creates the symbol lists.

LIDESC reports conflicts by comparing symbol lists for characteristics and incompatibilties. The list of standard LIDESC symbols and their meanings appears on this form.

Even though they depend on human interpretation, these symbolic terms are also a more formal way of classifying and analyzing software licenses. Formal classification promotes:
