What happens when I "subscribe"

[
Summary: news reader subscribe]

When you "subscribe" you are not actually telling anyone else that you are subscribing. You simply are telling your news reader software that you are more interested in that group than most groups.

Specifically, when you subscribe to a group, it does not mean that your news server will start carrying it. If the group is already present, you will be able to read it and the news reader will treat it a little differently than the other groups, as a matter of convenience.

But if the group is not already present, you will have to contact the administrator of the news server to get it added. (And even then, it may not be available.) For more information read the topic: Usenet RKT: (coming later!)How news gets to you
